Evergreen Road Drainage Work - Fall 2026?

"Downstream" Conditions

Water from the Middlesex side of this road drains into a ditch that feeds into a culvert (elevation -below sea level) under Pine Path near South Bethany's Town Hall. From there, the ditch parallels our Pine Path, and the water eventually finds its way west past the tennis club to the wetlands adjacent the Assawoman Bay.

DNREC was working on a plan to improve the drainage along Kent Ave, including the ditch parallel to Pine Path. However, they have informed us that this work would be too expensive for the state to undertake.

Existing Driveway Culverts

A larger percentage of the original driveway culverts are made of corrugated metal than elsewhere in the community, and these are rusting and collapsing. Several collapsing culverts have been replaced by MBA; one has been temporarily "stented" with a smaller diameter plastic culvert. Additionally, some property owners have paid for culvert replacement/expansions.

Existing Ditches

The ditches along Evergreen are deeper and wider than most of the rest of the community, but are still in need of some elevation adjustments and significant cleanouts. Along this road the asphalt is owned by the Town of South Bethany. MBA owns 25' of land south of individual owner's lot lines.

Upcoming Work

All machine work should occur on MBA property, and any existing plantings IN and hanging OVER the ditches will be removed. Additionally, anything between the ditch and the street could be impacted. Nothing will be allowed to grow back IN the ditches.

Not all driveways will be impacted; each will be evaluated individually. Many driveway culverts have wood walls, held together with large (potentially rusting?) thru bolts. Some have riprap (large stone) walls. While all on MBA property, the original driveway culverts and walls were built by the original homeowners.

REPLACE w 10": The partial collapse of this culvert was reported to MBA on 7/31/24. A smaller pipe was stented inside the 18" rusting corrugated steel culvert in case of complete collapse. We appreciate the assistance of the homeowner who helped clear vegetation from the side of the ditch and sand from the bottom of the decaying pipe.
