Corner of Dune and E. Short - Emergency Vehicle Access
The Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company has previously noted issues with their equipment being able to access East Short Rd. They brought their ladder truck over in early April 2025, and made some recommendations:
a) remove the post/rail fence at this corner
b) move the street name sign post, and relocate the E. Short Rd sign to the fence
c) remove any part of the plantings that extend above the existing fence (at least near the corner) so that the bucket on their truck clears all obstructions.
d) move the mailbox-either to the SE corner of the property or across the street. Note that several houses along the west side of Dune Rd have mailboxes on the east side, or in front of a different property along the west side.

In 2023, our Arborist had pointed out these Leyland Cypresses were in bad shape and recommended their removal. These were originally planted shortly after this stretch of street was paved in September 2005; they were chosen by former community member Paul Schlosser (who owned a nursery on the Eastern Shore) because they would grow up to be narrow and not extend over the street. See the bottom of the page for some pictures taken around the time of the paving project; I have yet to find any pictures of the bushes after they were planted.

The BBVFC indicates that the tree that is perhaps the fullest is in the way of the bucket on their ladder truck. Note that Sea Colony has since replaced the chain link fence with a more aesthetically pleasing bronze fence.

First picture below was taken in May 2004 as we were pondering paving the last stretch of unpaved road in the community. The stake in the ground is the corner of 53 Dune. The pictures of work being done were taken in Sepbember 2005. The bottom two were taken a few weeks later as we pondered how to keep vehicles from driving on private property. The 2 piling caps were eventually replaced by the post/rail fence visible in the above pictures.
